Celebrating 125 Years in Education

Blackpool and The Fylde College has served the Fylde coast for 125 years and is today renowned for providing technical education for students who go on to have rewarding careers in a wide range of industries.

Tracing its roots back to the fishing port of Fleetwood, where it first opened in 1892, the College retains a focus on aspects of education and training needed to drive the economy, deliver a skilled workforce for industry and secure sustainable employment for students.

Currently, around 18,000 students annually choose to study at B&FC, while more than 1,000 businesses - locally, regionally and nationally - choose B&FC to deliver education and training programmes for their staff.

In 2013, B&FC was judged as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted while the same year the College's higher education provision received more commendations than any other institution in the UK from the Quality Assurance Agency for higher education.

In 2015, the College received the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for technical and professional work in partnership with employers.

B&FC’s national standing was confirmed when it was awarded Chartered Institute for Further Education status in July 2016.

In September the same year, B&FC received Foundation Degree Awarding Powers from the Privy Council, following on from a long partnership with Lancaster University to award degrees from one of the top 10 universities in the UK.

In 2017, B&FC was identified as the highest performing large further education college in England for student success for the third consecutive year and was awarded the highest possible gold status in the government’s new Teaching Excellence Framework for higher education.

Throughout its distinguished history, B&FC has maintained close ties with the community and built relationships with employers, with many qualifications co-created with industry to best meet their needs.

September 2017 saw the opening of the new Lancashire Energy HQ, the College’s newest campus and a fitting achievement in its 125th year.

B&FC is proud of its record in supporting students and celebrates its past successes while looking forward to a bright future.
