The Advanced Learner Loan is available to students aged 19 and over studying an eligible course from levels 3 to 6. Applications can be made now for courses starting from 1 August 2017. For details about eligibility, please read the FAQs below.
Accessing and repaying the loan
Getting a loan doesn’t depend on your household income and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a year, although this threshold will change to £25,000 a year from April 2018. Once you earn over this amount you pay back 9% of the earnings you receive above this figure. The loan is written off entirely after 30 years.
Combining study loans
You can take out an Advanced Learner Loan and then a student loan for higher education. Your loans will be rolled into one and you will only make one monthly repayment. If your Advanced Learner Loan is for an Access to Higher Education course and you go on to complete a degree, the Advanced Learner Loan gets written off.
Applying is easy
Once you’ve chosen your course, you will get a Learning and Funding Information letter which you need to complete the application.
When you’re ready, apply online at gov.uk/advancedlearnerloan.
Additional financial support
You may be eligible for extra financial support once you are in receipt of an Advanced Learner Loan to help with travel, childcare, accommodation and course costs.
