Course SummaryDevelop the skills and knowledge needed to start a rewarding career in beauty therapy with the Level 2 Beauty Therapy Diploma. The programme teaches the techniques required to make a tangible difference to clients’ appearance and overall sense of wellbeing. You will develop proficiency in providing a range of treatments and carrying out services such as waxing, manicures and pedicures. There is also a focus on developing customer service skills along with an awareness of environmental and sustainability themes. Our industry specialist tutors will support you to achieve your career goals, which may include progressing to the Level 3 Beauty Therapy programme. Entry Requirements 4 GCSEs grade 3 - 1 including English and Maths a successful interview with a tutor the ability to study independently a genuine interest in the subject good communication skills hardworking approach towards the industry Essential Skills – English and Maths If you achieve a grade 3 in GCSE Maths or English you will have to work towards re-sitting these subjects as part of your main study programme. At B&FC, this won’t delay your career journey because you’re working towards these subjects at the same time as your chosen subject. Qualification ObtainedDiploma in Beauty Therapy Studies Industry Placement and Field TripsWork placement is a compulsory element of the study programme for all 16-18 year olds, students will spend one day per week in a work placement. For 19+ students work placement is encouraged and dates set on an individual basis. It is the responsibility of each student to find their placement. Learning and Teaching MethodsAt Blackpool and The Fylde College we recognise that all students learn differently and for some it may be a return to the classroom following a break from formal learning. Our tutors work with you to ensure that their teaching methods support the way that you like to learn. One key teaching and learning method is that of demonstrations. Your tutors ensure that demonstrations are used whenever possible so you can see the practical skill being used so you can then practise the skill. You will work collaboratively with your peers in group work, presentations and within practical salon sessions. Following demonstrations you will then have hands on practical time where you will be learning the practical beauty skills. You will be required to model for your peers as well so you can experience the therapies first hand. In addition, you will also be expected to apply these skills to clients in our working salons. There will be dedicated individual/self-study time on your programme which needs to be supported by your own study out of the College learning environments. E-learning is also a key element of all our courses and will involve you using our Moodle platform for independent study and learning. Within the curriculum we also use a range of on-line apps to support, enhance and motivate learning. Your tutors will be support you with new technologies used in the classroom. Your tutors will support you in preparing for your examinations alongside your own responsibility for your learning. For 16 - 18 year olds - Subject to prior qualification maths and English study hours may vary. 13 hours vocational class contact with either 3.8 hours additional for GCSE maths and 3.8 hours additional for GCSE English or 1.5 hours for each functional skill. This will be calculated and confirmed at enrolment. For 19 + students your work schedule will include up to 16 hours per week. Independent study will be with be guided by the tutor. Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Throughout your programme you will need to be set up and maintain an online portfolio of evidence, which you will be able to download on completion. Other Costs and Equipment NeededFor 16-18 year olds all equipment, including a uniform, is provided by the college. Full, flat, black, leather or durable shoes (no trainers or fabric) must be purchased and worn at all times with the uniform. For 19+ students a uniform, at a cost of £35, must be purchased ( order forms are provided by the College). All students will be expected to provide their own stationery, to include: pens, notepad and an A4 folder. All students will also require a bun ring as hair must be up in a bun at all times whilst in College. Replacement ID badges will be at a cost of £3 or £8 if incorporated with a bus pass. The purchase of a fob watch is optional. For photocopying, students are provided with the first 80 black and white free of charge. Career Options and Progression This qualification provides you with eligibility to become members of recognised professional bodies including The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). This qualification has national and international recognition and so associated travel is also a benefit. On completion of this course you may choose to seek employment in a commercial salon or day/destination spa. Or you may wish to be independent or self-employed, working in a mobile or home-based setting. The primary aim of this qualification is employment but it also provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills and knowledge further if you aim for achieving a level 3, or a higher qualification.
