Course Summary This female-only construction multi skills evening course has been developed exclusively for women who would like to sample and learn some of the key trades related to the construction industry. It has been designed both to enable students who might want to enhance their existing practical skills to enable them to take on small scale DIY jobs at home or for friends and family and for individuals who are thinking of a possible career within the construction industry. Arranged over 10 weeks, the course gives students the opportunity to experience a number of different trades and hopefully get a feel for which ones might suit them best were they to go on to further study. Created specifically for female students who might feel more comfortable learning in a women-only environment, the course also aims to build confidence, communication and resilience whilst working within a team and also as an individual. As well as the female-only course, we offer the same course to a mixed gender group if that would be preferable. Entry Requirements 19+ Female Only Qualification Obtained Level 1 Award In Introduction to Construction Industries The course introduces students to basic skills in the following areas: Carpentry and joinery Plastering Wall and floor tiling Plumbing Brickwork Health and safety Industry Placement and Field Trips There are no industry placements or field trips planned for this course. Learning and Teaching Methods Teaching on the course is largely practical in nature with tutors demonstrating techniques and giving students the opportunity to practise them individually and as part of a team. Tutors then support students on a one-to-one basis giving advice and feedback during practical exercises. There is some theory work to allow participants to gain an understanding of materials and their attributes and key information on health and safety issues both in domestic settings and in the construction industry more generally. Meet the Expert Tutors All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice. Assessment Methods You will be assessed on an ongoing basis during your practical sessions to ensure you have grasped the key techniques and so that tutors can see you are working in a safe, tidy and methodical manner. You will also be expected to produce a portfolio of work examples which can be used to assess your overall progress during the course and undertake a self-directed assignment which will also be assessed. Career Options and Progression This course is an introduction to the construction industry. Successful completion of this course means you can progress onto Level 2 and then Level 3 construction courses and ultimately into degree level study if you wish. Reaching Level 3 will give you all the skills you need to progress confidently into the workplace in construction generally or into a trade if you have chosen to study a particular pathway. As well as working for an employer, this will also open the door to self-employment if you decide you want to go down this route.
