Physical Disabilities

Whatever physical challenges you face, we are here to support you to make genuine progress towards achieving your goals.

Blackpool and The Fylde College strives to be a genuinely inclusive learning organisation where staff and students are treated with respect and dignity, and everyone has a fair opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Our approach to disability equality recognises and responds to the needs of all the communities we serve. We respect individual differences and value and celebrate the diversity within our community.

What is a physical disability?

A physical disability limits the physical function of one or more limbs and/or total or partial loss of a part of the body. In general a physical disability has long-term effects, but can also be temporary, following an accident or illness.

A person may be born with a physical disability or acquire it later in life. It can be limiting on a person’s physical functioning, mobility, dexterity or stamina. Some examples of physical disabilities include cerebral palsy, arthritis, amputation, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injury.

People with a physical disability may have difficulties with:

  • Walking
  • Gross motor skills
  • Managing stairs
  • Accessing equipment without adaptation
  • Personal care
